Voting should be mandatory for all eligible citizens

Some democracies require voting by law. Should this be universal?

I think voting should totally be mandatory for everyone who's eligible. It's a civic duty, y'know? Plus, it ensures that everyone's voice is heard, not just the loud ones. We gotta make sure every person plays a part in making decisions that affect all of us. It's like, come on, we gotta all have skin in the game to make this democracy thing work.

We already require jury duty. Why is voting different? It's a civic responsibility, and the democracy works better when everyone participates.

The people who don't vote are often the most marginalized. Their concerns get ignored precisely because they're not voting. Mandatory voting would change that.

I get what you're saying, but forcing people to vote doesn't necessarily mean their concerns will be addressed. Quality over quantity, right?

Hmm, interesting perspective. But wouldn't forcing people to vote go against the whole idea of democracy?

Absolutely, it's like rooting for a team but never showing up for the game. Every voice matters, especially those who feel marginalized.

It's not like they throw you in jail. Australia charges like $20 if you don't vote and it's easy to get out of. It's just a nudge to participate.

I agree! A little nudge to encourage participation isn't a bad idea. It's interesting how different countries approach the idea of mandatory voting.

Totally get what you're saying. A little push like that can go a long way in boosting civic engagement.

Forcing people to vote goes against the whole idea of freedom. If someone doesn't want to vote, that's their choice. Plus, imagine the chaos of trying to enforce mandatory voting - no thanks, I'll pass on that kind of government overreach.

I get the idea behind mandatory voting, but come on, forcing everyone to vote doesn't solve the problem. You can't make people care about issues by threatening them with fines. I'd rather focus on making voting accessible, engaging, and meaningful to everyone. My experience tells me that real change comes from genuine participation, not from ticking a box because you have to.

Mandatory voting? Are we serious right now? Look, I believe in the importance of voting, don't get me wrong. But forcing people to do it? Nah. Making it mandatory won't automatically make people informed or passionate about the issues. People should vote because they want to, not because they have to. Let's focus on education and engagement instead of mandates.

I get your point, but I think mandatory voting could still increase overall participation, even if not everyone becomes super informed. It might help get more people involved in the process.

Different culture here than Australia. Americans generally don't like being told what to do by the government. This would create massive backlash.
Jan 14, 2026
The fact that this is even debatable shows how disconnected some people are from reality.
Jan 14, 2026
Forcing people who don't care and haven't researched anything to vote seems like a recipe for worse decisions, not better ones.
Jan 27, 2026
I get what you're saying, but mandatory voting can actually lead to more awareness and engagement among the public. Just my take on it!
Jan 14, 2026
People don't vote because they feel the system doesn't represent them. Forcing them to participate doesn't fix that underlying problem.
Jan 14, 2026
Yes! Thank you for saying this. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when people argue the other side.
