Should social media companies be held responsible for the misinformation that spreads on their platforms?

I've seen so much bogus info on social media, it's ridiculous! People believe anything they read online without fact-checking. These platforms need to get their act together and stop letting lies go viral. It's about time they take responsibility for the mess they've created.

Regulate social media to fight misinformation? Nah, I don't buy it. I mean, sure, there's a lot of garbage out there, but do we really want to give Big Brother more power to police what we see? I'd rather decide for myself what's true and what's not, than have some algorithm or government agency deciding for me. Let's not throw out freedom of speech for the sake of avoiding a few fake news stories.
